What is Smile Laser/Relex?
Smile Laser/Relex is an innovative laser eye surgery technology for the minimally invasive correction of myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. This method, called “Small Incision Lenticule Extraction” (SMILE), involves making a very small incision in the corneal layer of the eye and removing a lenticule through this incision to correct the eye’s refractive error.
How is Smile Laser/Relex Procedure Performed?
The Smile Laser/Relex procedure is performed using only a single laser. The treatment takes about 10-15 minutes and usually both eyes are treated at the same time. During the procedure, a very thin, precise incision is made into the cornea with the femtosecond laser. The laser then removes a very small lens-shaped tissue (lenticule) from the cornea. By removing this lenticule, the shape of the cornea changes, which allows the eye to focus light correctly, correcting vision defects.
